Members of the Fighting for Our Vote coalition including NAACP, ACLU, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, American Federation Of Teachers and National Education Association will host their first mobilization event in Detroit at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 21 to raise awareness for the need for new federal and state voting rights protections. The event will be attended by hundreds of activists and include remarks from local leaders to engage and educate residents about rampant voter suppression. Speakers include NAACP President and CEO Derrick and NEA President and CEO Becky Pringle. The coalition will also hold events in Milwaukee and Washington D.C this weekend.
Over the next year, the coalition will coordinate a mass mobilization effort to elevate advocacy in response to the voting rights attacks happening in states and cities across the country. The mobilization campaign comes at a time when statehouses nationwide are disenfranchising voters by imposing identification requirements and restricting access to vote early and by mail. In Congress, lawmakers have failed to pass legislation that will provide strong voting rights protections, institute early voting and increase access to polling sites.
The event takes place at 1 p.m. at Gordon Park, Rosa Parks Blvd & Clairmont St. in Detroit.
All volunteers will follow recommended health and safety guidelines by wearing face masks, washing hands or using hand sanitizer frequently, and practicing social distancing.
