City of Detroit partners with Rizzo Environmental Services for free recycling carts to students for Earth Day

Students at Detroit’s Davison Elementary-Middle School will learn about the 3Rs of recycling and leave school with a chance to get a free recycling container for their home during an Earth Day celebration on Friday, April 22. The goal of the celebration is to encourage young people to recycle and promote the City of Detroit’s curbside recycling program.
The event will include assemblies for grades 3 – 5 is from 9 – 9:45 a.m. and for grades 6 – 8 from 10 – 10:45 a.m.  The program is sponsored by Rizzo Environmental Services, in partnership with Green Living Science and the City of Detroit.  Davison Elementary-Middle School is located at 2800 E. Davison Street, Detroit, 48212.
During the celebration, Green Living Science will teach students how to recycle, focusing on what can and cannot go into the recycling container, and the three Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) with videos and an appearance by Recycle Here’s mascot, BEE Green.  Councilman Scott Benson also will speak at the assemblies.
Students attending the assemblies will receive a voucher for their parents to complete and return to school. Those households with completed forms will receive a free recycling cart, courtesy of Rizzo.  The company will make available 500 recycling containers for the parents of Davison students.  Students will also receive Earth Day themed favors that will remind them of the importance of creating a sustainable environment.
Under the City’s curbside recycling program, Detroit residents must opt into program and pay a one-time $25 fee to cover a portion of the cost for each 64-gallon container.
The school assembly is part of an effort to promote the curbside recycling program. Green Living Science and Zero Waste Detroit, on behalf of the City of Detroit, conduct educational workshops on curbside recycling and provide free recycling carts to city residents.
