A former Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh and local FOX 2 News TV news anchor was recently released from state prison after being locked up for five years for having sex with a minor.
Charles Pugh’s high-profile case stemmed from inappropriate relationships with a teen years earlier.
The Detroit Free Press reporter that Pugh, 50, left the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia on Wednesday with several books and other belongings in tow, said Chris Gautz, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).
“He is out now,” Gautz said in the article. “He had some individuals who picked him up and brought him some clothing to change into.”
Pugh was sentenced to up to 15 years in 2016 after he said he had sex with a teenage boy under the age of 16. According to the article, Pugh said that the sex acts occurred at least twice in 2003 and 2004 when he was 31 years old.
Pugh is to complete two years of parole and register as a sex offender, per state records regarding the terms of his release, according to the article. From following the terms of an MDOC internet use agreement to wearing an electronic tether (for a minimum of six months) to having no contact with a minor without permission, Pugh has a hefty price to still pay for his past misconduct.
Pugh served as Detroit City Council president from 2010 until he resigned in 2013; he made history as Detroit’s first openly gay elected official, according to the article.
