Cars don’t get cooler than this! Adding to the already jam-packed features and activities of the 12th Annual Quicken Loans Season of Winter Magic, throughout January CARved is showcasing seven spectacular ice sculptures of full-size cars representing the iconic automotive history and design of Detroit and the world in the Campus Martius Park area. This new attraction, with its impressive exhibition of the automotive industry’s mastery, coupled with the artistic skills and precision of renowned ice carvers, offers a whole new reason to visit downtown while also adding to the experience for those attending the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) this month.

“Just as Detroit is on the cutting edge of car manufacturing, innovative civic experiences continue to be created to draw people downtown,” said Robert Gregory, president, Detroit 300 Conservancy. “CARved is one of those not-to-be-missed features that will motivate people to visit for its unique offerings.”

Three of the ice model cars will have interactive elements, allowing people to chill for a “test drive,” and all seven will have lights within the sculptures to bring them to life at night. Ice models will begin cruising into Campus Martius Park on Wednesday, January 6 for detailing and finishing touches before the display opens to the public this weekend. The official opening date and time will be weather dependent.

Ice Cars-1-6“CARved is a great addition to all the fun activities and attractions downtown and will be appreciated by kids and car enthusiasts alike,” said John Marcicky, Quicken Loans director of placemaking. “We have sculptures of classic cars that give a nod to the Motor City’s automotive roots, and brand new concepts that embody the city’s innovation, providing a fun experience the whole family can enjoy.”

The sculptures are inspired by some of the slickest car creations ever developed both locally in the Motor City and from the international market. The makes and models represented include:

  • 1957 Chevy Nomad – Interactive sculpture, located in Cadillac Square
  • 1961 Chrysler 300G – Located in Cadillac Square
  • 1966 Ford Mustang – Interactive sculpture, located at The Chase Building
  • 1969 Lamborghini Miura – Located at 1 Campus Martius
  • 2017 Lamborghini Aventador– Interactive sculpture, located at 1 Campus Martius
  • 2017 Audi R8 – Located at 1 Kennedy Square/ Ernst Young Building
  • 2017 Bugatti Chiron – Located at The Chase Building

The cars selected to be part of the ice sculpture display tie in to related happenings in the downtown area. The 300G, Mustang and Miura classics were chosen as an accompaniment to the real cars which are part of The Drive Home, an 11-day road rally from Tacoma, Washington to Detroit to coincide with the opening of the NAIAS.

The ice-carved cars are the creation of Ice Creations, a family owned company from Ohio, which utilizes the most technologically advanced ice equipment available. Owner Chad Hartson is one of America’s leading sculptors with national and international recognition.

This year’s Quicken Loans Season of Winter Magic has had record-breaking attendance, including The Rink at Campus Martius Park, which has experienced the highest number of skaters during this year’s holiday period. The Rink is open through March 6.
