Candidates for Michigan Governor to Appear in Town Hall Forum October 12, 2014

schauer-snyderDetroit Public Television, The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press will co-host a Michigan Gubernatorial Town Hall Forum featuring Republican Governor Rick Snyder and Democrat Congressman Mark Schauer at 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2014 on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit.

The one-hour Town Hall Forum will include an audience of undecided voters, chosen by independent research companies contracted by both the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News. The voters will ask questions of the two candidates, along with Detroit Free Press Editorial Page Editor Stephen Henderson and Detroit News Editorial Page Editor Nolan Finley. Detroit Public TV Anchor Christy McDonald will serve as the event’s host.

The Detroit Public TV production will be broadcast live in the Detroit area on WTVS 56.1 and will be made available to every media outlet in the state via satellite and the Internet, to broadcast and/or webcast live in its entirety and/or in part, at any time.  “This Town Hall event will be as accessible as possible to the citizens of the State of Michigan. We feel it is our obligation, as the State’s largest public broadcaster, to use our resources to share this event with as many voters as possible,” said Rich Homberg, President and CEO of Detroit Public Television.

“We congratulate both men for taking this step, which is so important to voters and to the democratic process,” said Paul Anger, Publisher and Editor of the Detroit Free Press. “We’re looking forward to a robust discussion on issues important to the future of Michigan.”

“We’re pleased the two campaigns have agreed to face one another on a public stage to address the issues critical to Michigan voters,” said Jon Wolman, Editor and Publisher of The Detroit News. “The interests of voters are better served when they can compare the candidates side-by-side, for themselves, rather than be at the mercy of the endless barrage of campaign advertising.”

Viewers will be encouraged to participate in online discussions about the issues discussed in the Town Hall Forum by using #MItownhall.
