The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society (ACS), is reminding Southeast Michigan that early detection of cancer is important by hosting a screening event open to the public. Screening Saves: Cancer Screening and Education Event will allow people to catch up on cancer screenings they may have put off or forgotten to reschedule. On Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., screening mammograms, head and neck examinations and colorectal cancer screening consultations will be available at Karmanos, located at 4100 John R. St. in Detroit.
“We’ve heard celebrities talk about recent diagnoses, including Katie Couric detailing if she had received her mammogram on time, doctors may have been able to find her breast cancer even earlier,” explained April Brown, director of Concierge Services and Screening and Prevention at Karmanos. “We want to give the community peace of mind and offer the screenings they need at one event.”
Karmanos experts will also be on hand at the event to offer information and answer questions about the Screening and Prevention Program within the cancer centers throughout the Karmanos network; head and neck, colon and lung cancer screening guidelines; clinical trials; genetic counseling; and women’s wellness. Partnering with ACS, both organizations met to find a way to increase breast screening numbers. Still, a greater need for other cancer screenings transformed what the event will offer.
“We first saw a need to offer women screening mammograms, and then the idea flourished into something much greater,” said Megan Landry, senior manager of Cancer Support Strategic Partnerships at ACS. “Partnering with Karmanos allows us to provide screening services that people need in the community and introduce them to a cancer center and care team dedicated to helping prevent cancer with screenings, genetic counseling and so much more.”
Screening Saves: Cancer Screening and Education Event is open to the public. Appointments and registration are required for cancer screenings and screening consultations. Those planning to have a mammogram or a colorectal cancer screening consultation should bring their driver’s license or state ID and insurance card. Karmanos specialists will be on hand for uninsured or underinsured women who may be eligible for the Michigan Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP), which offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings.
