In the mist of the COVID-19 pandemic, Susan G. Komen Greater Detroit is continuing to support the fight against breast cancer. The organization, now celebrating 25 years, stands by the statement, “breast cancer doesn’t stop, neither do we.” Although the Race for The Cure has been put on hold due to the Coronavirus, Komen Greater Detroit is putting action to words by launching the “Pink It Out” campaign, a Facebook contest driven to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.
As we are sheltered in place the Komen Greater Detroit’s motto is “You can’t go out, but you can Pink It Out.” The contest began May 4th and will run through the end May.
The first week’s contest is “Who’s Your One?” Each participant is to highlight an impactful person in their life, who has been affected by breast cancer. Recently, my mother-in-love Sheryl Wheeler, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has been one of the most supportive people I’ve ever met. I am honored and grateful to have loving in-laws. Through her diagnosis and treatment, Mrs. Wheeler never showed any fear and remained positive. She is a phenomenal woman, mother, wife, sister, aunt, breast cancer survivor and “My One”.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Black women are more likely to get triple-negative breast cancer, a kind of breast cancer that often is aggressive and comes back after treatment.”
Wheeler is an advocate of early detection through mammograms. “Please get your mammogram. A few moments of pressure are worth ensuring your body is healthy,” said Wheeler. Her breast cancer was caught in the early stages, as she always scheduled her yearly mammogram like clockwork.
The “Pink It Out” campaign is a weekly contest where participants can enter in weekly for a chance to win prizes and have fun for an important cause.
