Spring in Detroit wouldn’t be complete and doesn’t officially happen without the sweet scent of petunias, the hum of eager shoppers, and a sea of color stretching across Eastern Market. On Sunday, May 18, 2025, one of the city’s most beloved traditions returns in full bloom, Flower Day, celebrating over 50 years of community, color, and cultivation.
Since 1967, Flower Day has marked the unofficial start of summer in Detroit, a vibrant gathering of green thumbs, curious onlookers, and seasoned gardeners converging at the historic market to usher in the season with blossoms in tow. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the entire market, spanning all seven sheds transforms into a fragrant floral wonderland featuring hanging baskets, vegetable plants, herbs, annuals, perennials, and shrubs grown by members of the Metropolitan Detroit Flower Growers Association.
And bring them it will. Flower Day draws tens of thousands of visitors every year, some arriving before sunrise to claim the best blooms. With dozens of regional growers offering expert advice and dazzling displays, it’s both a gardener’s paradise and an Instagrammer’s dream.
For those looking to beat the crowds, or extend their plant shopping beyond one day, Flower Tuesday Markets are back on May 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Sheds 5 and 6. Plus, daily vendor offerings will be available in Shed 6 from Mother’s Day through Father’s Day, with even more greenery up for grabs during the market’s regular Saturday events.
This year also brings a fresh creative twist: exclusive 2025 Flower Day merchandise featuring artwork by Detroit-based visual artist Allison Sims. Her limited-edition posters and T-shirts will be sold near Shed 3, capturing the electric energy of Flower Day in vibrant, hand-drawn style.

The first 50 posters will be signed and sold for $50, while additional prints go for $25, ideal for anyone wanting to take home more than just a plant.
As the city shakes off winter’s grip and looks forward to sunshine and longer days, Flower Day offers more than floral beauty, it’s a celebration of resilience, growth, and the enduring power of community.
So grab your wagon, your floppy sunhat, and join the crowds. Whether you’re a gardening pro or just in it for the vibes, Flower Day is where Detroit blooms brightest.
