A $5 million lawsuit was filed for a past Farmington Public Schools student against the school district over the use of a racial slur, Fox 2 reported. The student, who is Black, said that a white teacher called him the n-word in front of his class, according to the article.

“It’s been rough,” said the student’s mother Constance Wells in the article. “I want justice for my son for being called that.”

The lawsuit said that her son’s civil rights were violated after her son, Marcus Wells was called out of his name by his teacher, reportedly, in 2019.

Per court documents in November of 2019, Marcus was a Central High School junior when he received a threat from another student. His then-teacher, Ellen Ely allegedly used that word, which left him with deep emotional wounds.

“The teacher,  Ms. Ely, got up and approached Marcus Wells and called him the n-word,” attorney Leonard Mungo said in the story. The school district has been viewed in a negative light in the past for multiple racially insensitive incidents.
