Birmingham-based Jabs Gym to open new Detroit location early December 2015

jabs gymThree years after opening their first boxing gym in Birmingham, local entrepreneurs are expanding, opening Jabs Detroit: a 40-person high-intensity kickboxing and BOYO® classroom on Eastern Market’s main drag.

November 16, 2015 – Detroit, MI – Local entrepreneur David Tessler and Detroit-bred professional middleweight boxer Willie Fortune (20-2-0) today announced they will be opening their second gym location, Jabs Detroit, on Dec. 3 in Eastern Market. Their new Detroit home is at 2501 Russell Street, on the 3rd Floor, in same building as the soon-to-open Beyond Juice, Orleans & Winder, and the recently opened Detroit vs. Everybody store.

Jabs started as a passion project for Tessler. Though a RYT Certified Yoga instructor, he touts boxing as his preferred form of cardio. When he partnered with Detroit-bred professional middleweight boxer Willie Fortune to open their Birmingham gym, they were looking for easy access to ring and training space as much as a recipe for revenue.

Once it opened, however, the business didn’t stop growing — seven months after first opening their doors, they were breaking down walls to make more room. Today, their one-of-a-kind night club style kickboxing classes, BOYO® classes (a home-brewed mix of boxing and yoga), and fitness boot camps are selling out regularly, and the training staff that was 6 has grown to more than 18 trainers and coaches.

“Everyone thinks I’m crazy when I tell them about our BOYO® classes. But being a professional boxer, I find yoga provides the perfect complement to the physical demands of boxing,” explains Fortune, who’s fought on Showtime, Fox Sports, and Pay-Per-View. “It may not make sense to read about, but come try it. It’s a totally new spin on both boxing and yoga.”

“We want to help Detroit get and stay healthy, or at least help work off a few of the pie slices we eat this holiday season. Everybody has fitness goals, but we think we found some answers,” Fortune continues. Jabs Detroit is offering first-time attendee specials, as well as discounts for student, military, police, firefighter, and veteran groups.

For Jabs Detroit, Tessler and Fortune have partnered with Andrus McDonald, operator of Detroit nightclubs Envy, 3Fifty Terrace, the new Annex Detroit. McDonald’s experience in creating successful nightlife locations pairs perfectly with the business and boxing savvy already present, the team thinks.

“Boxing, and kick-boxing is one of the best cardio experiences you can get, and there’s no other experience like our group classes,” says Tessler. “For our classroom, we basically took 40 punching bags and put them in a nightclub. We use blacklights, a booming sound system, and give people a 60-minute, high-energy, teacher-led cardio experience that we haven’t seen happen quite like this anywhere else.”

Jabs Detroit will also offer individual 45-minute boxing training sessions with focus on mitt training, shadow boxing, jump rope, speed bag exercises, and heavy bag routines. Classes will be offered morning and night, weekdays and weekends, with showers in the facility for those who are heading to work, or heading elsewhere after their sweat.
