The City of Detroit has a leader in Mayor Dave Bing who has realized success in three distinct areas — professional sports, business and now politics.
While he is recognized around the world for his athletic achievements, he is now captain of a different team. This team is comprised of professionals who are committed to helping Mayor Bing redefine leadership and city government.
Here are a few members of Bing’s New Court.
Sue Carnell, group executive,
Mayor’s Office
Carnell is a seasoned executive with 30 years of experience in the public service sector who is responsible for all departments within Mayor Bing’s office including Communications, Legislative Affairs, Community Affairs, Faith Based Affairs, Senior Citizens and Neighborhood City Halls. Prior to joining the Bing administration, she served as an education advisor to Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm, and also served as director for the Michigan Department of Education. She earned her bachelor’s degree with distinction from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and holds a master’s degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University.
Mark Jones, group executive,
Jobs/Business Development
Jones joins Mayor Dave Bing’s administration after nearly 15 years of governmental affairs experience in the private sector and is responsible for the Detroit Department of Workforce Development, Office of Targeted Business, and manages the city’s grant writers. Most recently, he served as regional manager of Corporate and Government Affairs at DTE Energy. He also served as director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and as executive director of the Michigan Equal Employment and Business Opportunity Council. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Fisk University, and earned his juris doctorate from Case Western Reserve University.
Warren C. Evans, chief of
Police
Evans brings nearly 40 years of public service to Southeast Michigan to the office of chief of the Detroit Police Department. His dedication to criminal and social justice ranges through several positions held within Wayne County, including sheriff’s deputy, director of the Department of Community Justice, chief of Special Operations and Wayne County sheriff. As sheriff, Chief Evans managed an annual operating budget of $135 million and commanded more than 1,300 jail and police officers. He holds a bachelor of arts from Madonna University, a master of arts from the University of Detroit Mercy and a juris doctorate from the Detroit College of Law. He has numerous affiliations, including the State Bar of Michigan, U.S. Supreme Court Bar, and the Michigan Sheriff’s Association.
