Beyoncé also affectionately known as Queen Bey has donated $6 million dollars through her BeyGood initiative to support wellness services, support essential workers, food banks and more in major cities across the country.
“Communities of color are suffering by epic proportions due to the [COVID-19] pandemic. Many families live in underserved areas with homes that make it harder to practice social distancing,” the foundation wrote in a statement.
In partnership with Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey’s #startsmall initiative, the money will go to various community-based organizations, UCLA and the National Alliance in Mental Illness to provide on-the-ground essential needs and mental health services in New York, Detroit, New Orleans and Houston, Beyoncé’s home city.
“In our major cities, African-Americans comprise a disproportionate number of workers in these indispensable occupations, and they will need mental health support and personal wellness care, including testing and medical services, food supplies and food deliveries, both during and after the crisis,” read a statement released by Beyoncé’s representatives.
The recipients include health facilities supported by UCLA, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (particularly in New York, Houston, New Orleans, and Detroit), the United Memorial Medical Center, Bread of Life, Mathew 25, and more. Since the coronavirus outbreak, many groups have been created to help small businesses, scientific research, and child welfare—both locally and nationally. Bey, however, is focusing on communities in metropolises that have been especially hit hard.
“BeyGOOD is supporting organizations that are on the ground 24/7 to address these dire needs in some of the hardest hit areas, providing basic necessities, including food, water, cleaning supplies, medicines, face masks and person hygiene items,” according to the statement. “Void of these basic necessities, mental burdens are also accelerated.”
Recently, Beyoncé made a surprise appearance on ABC’s The Disney Family Singalong, where she sang the “When You Wish Upon a Star” dedicating the performance to “all of the healthcare workers who’ve been working tirelessly to keep us healthy and safe.”
