Gordy is the iconic founder of Motown Records, the hit-making enterprise, birthed in Detroit, that nurtured the careers of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, and many other music greats. The “Motown Sound” reached out across a racially divided, politically and socially charged country to transform popular music.
“A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting ‘The Chairman’, Mr. Berry Gordy at a Gala in New York,” said Hiram E. Jackson, publisher of the Michigan Chronicle. “That night he told me that his first job was delivering the Michigan Chronicle – so now we get a chance to honor him for marketing Detroit to the rest of the world.”
In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, Gordy will be joined by honorees in four other categories – Company of the Year, 2013 Newsmakers, 2013 Newsmaker of the Year and the Community Spirit Award. Honorees for each of these categories will be announced at a later date.
Now in its ninth year, The Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion Newsmaker’s Gala is one of metropolitan Detroit’s premier events that celebrates individuals who have made outstanding community contributions. Attended by movers, shakers and area newsmakers – from senior level executives and political officials to community stakeholders – Legacy in Motion recognizes and celebrates the top urban achievers of the year in an Academy Awards-style format.
