In a statement about affordable housing, Dr. Ben Carson calls these kinds of programs “social engineering.”

The statements came before he was appointed by President-elect Trump as the new head of HUD. Housing advocates are worried by Carson’s words.

“The fair housing community has been hoping for a HUD appointee that would do no harm,” said Erin Kemple, executive director of the Connecticut Fair Housing Center. “Someone who would not try to dismantle the fair housing laws even if he didn’t actively enforce them. We still hope Ben Carson could be that person, but the few things he has said raise a lot of red flags.”

HUD helps five million families find affordable homes and homeowners who are facing foreclosure. Equality or equal access to housing for all is a major tenet of the Fair Housing Act of 1965. The guarantee of equality has not been consistent and that is yet another concern for advocates.
