Beaumont Health System opens new Breast Care Center in West Bloomfield

Nearly one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. But statistics also show that if detected early, it’s highly curable. “At Beaumont, we detect more breast cancer than any other hospital in Michigan,” explains Nayana Dekhne, M.D., corporate medical director, Beaumont Breast Care Program. “With the opening of the new center, we are able to offer outpatient services needed by our breast care patients on the west side in one convenient location.”

At the Comprehensive Breast Care Center, patients will have an entire team of specialists who can recommend the best treatment as well as provide for the patient’s emotional needs. The team includes: breast imaging physician specialists; dedicated breast care surgeons; certified oncology nurse navigators; cancer genetics specialists; cancer rehabilitation and lymphedema specialists; social workers; and nutrition experts.

“Our focus is on meeting the needs of patients in our community with technological innovation and comprehensive, coordinated care,” says Thomas Lanni, vice president, Oncology Services. “This translates into better outcomes for our patients.”

Beaumont offers digital mammography throughout Metro Detroit. With an emphasis on expedited results, the time a patient has to wait for answers has dramatically decreased.

“The single most important thing a woman can do is follow early detection guidelines,” says Dr. Dekhne. “It is important to do monthly self-breast exams and at age 40 they should get a baseline mammogram.”

Clarkston artist Jan Mayer has left a lasting imprint on Beaumont Health System. A former patient and two-time breast cancer survivor, Jan has provided much of the art found throughout Beaumont Oncology Services, including art at the new West Bloomfield Breast Care Center.

“Beaumont has taken such good care of me that I consider it an honor to be able to do something for the hospital in return,” she says. “I believe we all have a mission in life. If I had to go through cancer to really know how to reach people with my artwork, then it’s absolutely been worth it.”
