Beacon Park, in partnership with The Downtown Detroit Partnership, New Detroit, Detroit Parks Coalition and Michigan Disability Rights Coalition will present “Just Place™: Exploring the Intersectionality of Race & Accessibility in Detroit’s Urban Green Spaces.” The event will take place Saturday, May 20, from 11AM to 2PM. It will be held at Beacon Park.
The weekend will also showcase a juried outdoor art exhibition curated by the Detroit Fine Arts Breakfast Club, featuring artwork, painting, photography, prints, and other unique art forms that will be available for sale. Detroit Hives, 12th and ViV, Paradise Natural Foods and Faust Haus Roasting Co. will be the featured vendors.
Though the main focus will be on race and accessibility in urban green spaces, but also how that intersects with disability. Moderators Marshalle Favors from New Detroit and Sigal Hemy from Detroit Parks Coalition will facilitate the panel. Jamie Junior from the Disability Network Wayne County Detroit (DNWCD), Alex Allen from Chandler Park Conservancy and Antonio Cosme from Black to the Land Coalition, Southwest Grows are the panelists. A Q&A will follow.
After the panel, those attending the event will break into small groups to create action items, which will be read to close out the occasion.
Beacon Park stated that an ASL interpreter will be on site for the panel discussion and there will be public restrooms will be open and accessible, too. Light snacks and water will also be provided, though attendees are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles. The park has water-fillling stations.
