The holiday of the year for Michigan Bacon Lovers is quickly approaching – Baconfest Michigan!
So what is Baconfest Michigan? It’s an indoor evening culinary charity event of monstrous bacon proportions!
But according to Baconfest Michigan producer Matthew Peach it’s not just about the bacon. Baconfest Michigan is a celebration of Michigan food, drink and benevolence all centered around Bacon.
“Our goal is to hold an entertaining event that inspires culinary creativity while raising awareness for local restaurants and organizations. We hope to continue to draw people from across the nation to promote culinary tourism here in Michigan.”
There should never be a complaint when bacon is present however I was curious to why bacon and not, well, sausage? “Bacon is an ingredient that seems to enhance many different flavors in many different foods. The variety in which it can be used in dishes is endless. It’s popularity has grown in recent years, making it a fun centerpiece to have a food event around.” Peach said.
Although bacon is the draw the real mission is about giving back to the community and according to Peach, charity begins at home. “We chose a charity from the city the event is being held in and one from the city where our home office is located. That way we support the local area that is supporting us, and we support the area around our home that supports us year round. We also select the charity based on a wide range of measures, including origination size, lifespan, community outreach, impact, and what the organization could do with a cash donation.”
This year’s charity is Justin’s Vision a non-profit organization dedicated to helping Michigan children with life-threatening illnesses enjoy a happy, care-free vacation with their families. Also, Gilda’s Club of Metro Detroit A free support community for men, women and children living with any type of cancer, their families and friends. Our innovative program is an essential complement to medical care, providing networking and support groups, education, and social activities.
What could be better than bacon? Bacon in the D!!! With the success of the Baconfest Michigan, Peach said that they are now considering moving to different locations. “As a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization, we want to continue to grow the event so more bacon lovers can join us and we can give more to charity. We’ve also talked to other cities about taking the event to different areas of the state. This year we are also going to have our famous Baconfest Seasoning available for guests to take home. It’s possible we could move the event closer to the heart of the city next year.”
