Athletic App Grows C-Suite

Strava, a mobile app and website designed especially for athletes, is a growing platform with More than 2 million new athletes joining each month. Serving more than 92 million athletes in 195 countries, the app allows athletes from all over to compete with others as well as set personal goals for themselves at the touch of a button. The app is designed to allow team play without being in the same location. Now, the leading digital platform has announced a new member to the team naming Lily Yang as its Chief Financial Officer, according to a press release.

Founded in 2009 by Michael Horvath and Mark Gainey, Strava employs 300 employees around the world, with offices in San Francisco, Denver, The United Kingdom and Ireland. Recently ramping up, the company hired Yang as a part of the more than 100 new employees hired since the start of the year. In her new role, Yang will oversee the financial and legal organizations to support Strava’s growth and its business in all of the countries the app services worldwide.

At this juncture, the business is reviving its focus on its leadership board and team. The company is intentional in building its team with highly skilled and strategic business leaders that will help push the company to the next level. Adding Yang to the growing team helps the company stick to that vision.

“Lily is a proven financial leader, with a depth and breadth of experience guiding strategic initiatives at high-growth companies. Her innovative approach and ability to lead with disciplined execution is invaluable in shaping our leadership team for the next era of growth at Strava,” says Michael Horvath, CEO of Strava.

Assuming this new role may be a new endeavor for Yang, but she is no stranger to large corporations or big business. Formally, the incoming Chief Financial Officer for Strava served as the Chief Accounting Officer for another social media platform, Pinterest. Overseeing performance and profitability initiatives, Yang partnered with key stakeholders to bring Pinterest to 30 countries in North America, Europe and Latin America over a three-year period.

“Strava has reached a unique, high-growth moment as a company and community. It’s an honor to join Strava in building the platform at the center of connected fitness, amplifying the athlete experience around the world,” says Yang.

Recently, the company appointed David Swain as Vice President of Content Strategy and the board’s appointment of Jerrell Jimerson, Executive Vice President, Disney Streaming.

In October, Strava was listed among the Most Loved Workplaces list for 2021 created by Newsweek. The athletic app ranked among the top 100 companies recognized for employee happiness and satisfaction at work according to a survey of 800,000 employees from businesses with workforces varying in size from 50 to more than 10,000.

“As Strava’s business, company and community continue to grow, our values, or what we call ABCs, of antiracism, authenticity, balance, craftsmanship, camaraderie, and commitment, remain central to how we operate and move forward as a team. We practice and cultivate these values every day at Strava, and it’s reflected in the joy and inspiration our community of over 90 million athletes feel while using the platform,” says Michele Bousquet, Chief People Officer, Strava.

Currently, the app features over 2,200 professional athletes. Strava has released over 80 new features and updates to its free and subscription offerings so far this year, including routing and mapping innovations, group challenges, improved privacy controls and partner integrations.

The app is also encouraging all levels of athletes to join their community and offering a free subscription to their app. Over 4 million photos are shared each week between the athletes along with 40 million activities uploaded weekly. Visit their website for enrollment.
