Could the reparation discussion be a reality for Black residents in Detroit come November?

That’s the hope for an increasing number of Detroit residents who are looking to vote on the possibility of allowing reparations for Blacks in the predominately Black city to come to fruition, Fox 2 reported.

The ballot proposal would take financial gains from legalized marijuana to pay for the reparations, the article reported.

Local attorney Todd Perkins said that there are “a little bit more than 3,600 signatures” in support of the ballot measure.

“We are close to 4,000.”

“It’s the biggest, blackest city yet you still see an economic divide,” Perkins said in the article. “A gap that is significant and it has not been quelled.”

Perkins belongs to this grassroots movement that would let Detroit voters to update the city’s charter allowing the residents the right to pass legislation to use city funds for specific projects, the article added.

“It’s also a very symbolic thing – it’s an acknowledgment. Everybody can acknowledge slavery is wrong and everybody can say I’m sorry, but words mean action,” Perkins said in the article.

City Council President Pro-Tem Mary Sheffield is working on a resolution that will result in a vote on today.

Sheffield plans to hold a press conference on Friday to address this topic.
