The sports drama film CREED starring Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Johnson), Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa) and directed by Ryan Coogler has extended the legendary Rocky franchise. Although CREED did not gross nearly as much as Rocky 1 did in its opening weekend in 1976, I’m sure the CREED extension of the franchise will keep Rocky fans intrigued.
Johnson who is boxing champion Apollo Creed’s son, who was born after Creed’s death from an extramarital affair, wants to make a name for himself in the boxing world. He seeks out Balboa, former heavyweight boxing champion, also Creed’s former friend and rival to train him. Although Creed died with Balboa in his corner, Johnson considers him family.
Rocky attempts to teach Johnson to fight his toughest opponent which is himself and the animosity held for his father whom he’d never met; while at the same time helping Rocky find the willingness to fight for his life.
The story was a bit predictable, however it followed the basic Rocky mantra. CREED was very entertaining and believable. I applaud Stallone for keeping the Rocky franchise alive and continuing to be the character we have come to love. The acting was on point! I enjoyed watching Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone on screen together. I give the film 3.5 out of 5 stars.
The film is rated PG-13.
