As the end of the year approaches, hundreds of Detroit families will come together this Saturday to recognize and celebrate the powerful role parents play in Detroit. Each year, the city’s preeminent parent advocacy and support organization, Detroit Parent Network, convenes a celebration breakfast featuring prominent Detroit leaders discussing topics like education, safety and the city’s future. This year’s breakfast will be held on Saturday, December 6, from 9 a.m. until noon, at the Detroit Marriott at Renaissance Center. Several hundred Detroit residents are expected to be in attendance.
Detroit Parent Network CEO Sharlonda Buckman welcomes Detroit Police Department Chief James Craig, as a keynote speaker for the event. Craig will share progress made and data that proves Detroit is becoming a safer city for families. An education panel featuring Black Family Development Institute CEO Alice Thompson, City Year Detroit CEO Penny Bailer, Marcus Garvey Academy Principal James Hearn, Phoenix Multicultural Academy Principal Alexander Cintron, along with teachers and parents, will discuss educational outcomes, the village it takes to raise a child, and how a proposed common enrollment system could benefit all Detroit children.
