The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board has officially named Jazz Parks as the interim superintendent after several weeks of robust discussions and contemplation prompted by Superintendent Jeanice Kerr Swift’s resignation. Swift, a notable figure with a long history in the district, chose to step down under the terms of a voluntary settlement and resignation agreement. In a pivotal evening session, the school board voted unanimously, 6-0, in favor of appointing Jazz Parks as the interim superintendent, signifying a significant advancement for the school district.
Jazz Parks is no stranger to the Ann Arbor Public Schools system, having served as an assistant superintendent in the district since 2020. Her appointment to the role of interim superintendent comes after an extensive career within the district. With 16 years of dedicated service, Parks has held various administrative positions, including executive director of middle and K-8 schools, middle school principal, and assistant principal. Her deep understanding of the district’s dynamics and culture makes her a well-suited candidate for this crucial role. Parks’ dedication to education also extends beyond Ann Arbor Public Schools, as she previously served as an assistant principal at Great Lakes Academy Charter School and as a teacher at Ann Arbor Learning Community.
Parks’ academic background adds further weight to her qualifications. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, reflecting her commitment to professional development and educational excellence.
The transition to Jazz Parks as interim superintendent will also involve the continued presence of Superintendent Jeanice Kerr Swift within the district. According to the terms of the agreement, Swift will serve as a transition adviser to the interim or permanent superintendent through December 31. This arrangement ensures a smooth transition, and the preservation of the valuable experience and insights Swift has gathered during her tenure.
Before expressing her vote, board trustee Susan Baskett confidently endorsed Parks for the position.
“Ms. Parks is unquestionably the ideal candidate for this role. She’s a resilient individual, a strong Black woman, and I believe she will lead with authority. I also hope our community will honor and respect her leadership. In the past, we may not have had the best track record in this regard, but we owe Ms. Parks our sincere gratitude for taking on this challenging role during this turbulent period of transition.”
The board’s decision to appoint Parks as the interim superintendent has not been without its fair share of controversy. Swift’s resignation led to heated debates within the school board, angering parents, school employees, and community members who learned of the board’s intentions to replace her.
