The American Heart Association [AHA] recently announced that Kristian Hurley was named Metro Detroit’s executive director. In that role, Hurley will be responsible for the fundraising and community engagement programs that create longer, healthier lives for everyone who lives in southeast Michigan, according to a press release.

Hurley, has nine years of experience at AHA, with her most recent experience as the senior director of Community Impact in Detroit. She has co-led the market’s Board of Directors with the executive director, oversaw a team of Community Impact directors, and developed much-needed corporate and foundation partnerships with the Ballmer Group, Michigan Health Endowment Fund, and Enterprise Community Partners, the press release added.

“Kristian is a thought-leader, an innovator, and a colleague who truly creates impact in every role she plays,” Kevin Harker, executive vice president of the American Heart Association’s Midwest Region, said in the press release. “We are excited to see her step into this important leadership role.”

The American Heart Association in Detroit is also working to improve health outcomes for all residents across the region through investments in cardiovascular and COVID-19 research. This comes at an important time as the Black community is still significantly being impacted by the virus at a higher rate than other groups.

“We are continuing to work alongside the community to reduce health disparities through initiatives that address issues such as healthy food access, hypertension, social health disparities and tobacco use,” the release added.

Hurley has a bachelor of science in management, also a bachelor of arts in political science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
