The AKA Teens participated in the 30th Annual Peace Walk Celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. #MLKDay2015 — at Alpha Kappa Alpha Foundations of Detroit.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, Alpha Rho Omega Chapter, Detroit, Michigan, will host its 107th Founders Day observance on Saturday, Jan. 24 at noon. The event will be held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center in the Renaissance Ballroom. The afternoon will include a luncheon and a tribute to the esteemed founders of the first Greek-letter sorority for African American women, established in 1908 at Howard University.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has flourished into a globally-impactful organization of over 265,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.
Through the years, Alpha Kappa Alpha has used the sisterhood as a grand lever to raise the status of African Americans, particularly girls and women. The sorority has enriched minds and encouraged life-long learning; provided aid for the poor, the sick and underserved; initiated social action to advance human and civil rights; worked collaboratively with other groups to maximize outreach on progressive endeavors; and continually produced leaders to continue its credo of service.
Alpha Rho Omega Chapter was established in 1922 and is the 13th chapter chartered in the organization. Today it is the largest chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in the state of Michigan. For over 90 years, the chapter has provided programs of service to the metropolitan Detroit community that support the sorority’s international program thrusts. The president of Alpha Rho Omega Chapter is Stacey A. Travis. The event Chairman is Denise M. Hudson and the Co-Chairman is Sylvia Ross Sherrill.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover will address the theme, “Celebrating Our Legacy as We Launch New Dimensions of Service.” Dr. Glover was elected International First Vice President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® in July 2014. She is the former International Treasurer of the sorority and has served on several international committees. She is a member of Beta Delta Omega Chapter in Jackson, Mississippi where she held positions of President, Vice President and Treasurer.
Dr. Glover serves as President of Tennessee State University and is a certified public accountant, an attorney and is one of two African American women in the nation to hold the Ph.D.-CPA-JD combination. She is a frequently sought keynote speaker at churches, national conventions, professional associations and community events.
Dr. Glover’s educational development began as a student at Tennessee State University, where she majored in mathematics. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, she pursued the Master of Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University. She then completed her doctorate in business from George Washington University and later earned a law degree from Georgetown University. Dr. Glover is one of few women to serve on corporate boards of publicly traded corporations. Among these are Pinnacle Financial Partners, Citigroup-Student Loan Corporation, The Lenox Group and First Guaranty Bancshares.
Dr. Glover is a member of several professional, civic and non-profit organizations and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. She and her husband, Charles, are the parents of two adult children, Candace Glover, and Charles Glover II.
The event is open to the public and tickets are $60 by phone at (313) 341-8520. For further information, visit the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority-Alpha Rho Omega Chapter page on Facebook.
