The large brick church on the corner of West Warren and W. Grand Blvd. is a beacon of light in the community. The building has stood the test of time through weather and economic conditions as the community has changed and many have moved away. Yet on any Sunday morning you can hear great singing and preaching and experience friendly fellowship as many people travel miles to come to worship at 1510 W. Grand Blvd.
Some come because this is the church of their family origin. Some come because of the history of outreach and community engagement. Many are drawn to Carter because of their love for the Word of God, and the preaching from the youngest pastor in the church’s 95 year history, Rev. Dr. Twana A. Harris; a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, who was assigned as Pastor of the Carter Church in August of 2014. A gifted preacher and psalmist, Dr. Harris is an effective leader in the areas of worship, service, and creative arts.
In the words of Calvin Patillo, life member and officer on the Steward Board, “Carter Metropolitan has produced some of the best musicians, TV and Radio personalities, educators, politicians, attorneys, entrepreneurs, community activists, and other professionals who have greatly impacted the city of Detroit and the world beyond. Our church has been favored by having some of the most renowned pastors who have impacted the faith–based institution globally: Rev. Dr. JL Scipio, Rev. William Meriwether, Rev. Dr. Jessie L. Douglass Sr., Rev. Dr. Clarence C Buchanan, Rev. Dr. Faith A. Allen and our current pastor, the phenomenal Rev. Dr. Twana A. Harris.”
Patillo reports over the years, “Carter Metropolitan has served the community through service- based programming connected to food and clothing, Vacation Bible School, scouting, grant writing, educational and preparatory classes, sports teams, and weekly opportunities for Bible study. For many members of the community, our church has been a ray of hope to keep them encouraged.”
Carter’s anniversary theme: “Celebrating 95 Years Through Unshaken Faith!” is taken from the scripture: “Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer God acceptable worship with reverence and awe.” Hebrews 12:28 ESV
“What a blessing it is to celebrate 95 years of ministry, service, and fellowship within this community. Our presence here, is a testimony of God’s Grace, God’s Power, and God’s Purpose for a group of like-minded believers who have been called out to serve, love, and encourage each other. We have seen change, after challenge for these 95 years on this corner, and yet we remain UNSHAKEN, and excited about what the next 95 years and beyond will hold for us. God just keeps on doing great things, and we are humbled that God chooses US to be a part of those great things,” says Harris.
The 95-year celebration for Carter Metropolitan will include a full year of activities and observances.
The Pastor, Ministers, Officers and Members invite ‘all’ to be their special guests for the special celebratory events beginning with The Grand Banquet on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the Best Western Hotel, 26555 Telegraph near 12 Mile Rd. in Southfield, as well as the world premiere of the latest stage play written and directed by Pastor Harris, entitled, “The Recovery.”
The play brings to life God’s promise as we see how if we would just let God work in our lives, we
can recover from anything. The play demonstrates how God can give you back what you lost and return peace to your life thru Recovery. Witness the spirit thru acts and great gospel singing that will encourage and uplift you.
According to the director/ Pastor Harris, “The Recovery” explores the impact of faith on the decisions that we make and ultimately how we deepen our relationship with God.
