We want to spotlight a beacon of strength and vitality that has stood the test of time, quietly impacting lives and shaping destinies – the Butzel Family Rec Center.
The Rec Center, located in Detroit’s east side, has been a mainstay for the city’s Black youth. Serving as an emblem of positive community engagement, it offers not just recreation but education, mentoring and a sense of belonging to the many who walk through its doors. For decades, the Center has uplifted the lives of thousands, if not more, of Detroit’s youth.
“The mission of Butzel Family Center in the community is the same as all of our rec centers across the city. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all Detroiters through parks, greenways, recreation centers and programs, using an equity framework,” said Keith Flournoy, deputy director of Detroit General Services Department Recreation Division. “As it pertains to Butzel Family Center, our focus is to provide a safe and clean facility and open space for the community where seniors, children and adults can come and participate in quality programs.”
Let’s be clear. Centers like Butzel are more than just buildings; they are the heart and soul of the community, and they do a lot more than just keep kids off the streets. They are safe havens, empowering young people with tools and opportunities to help them navigate the choppy waters of life.
In Detroit, where economic disparity and racial inequality can often cast long shadows, the role of the Butzel Family Rec Center cannot be overstated. This facility has long been a sturdy pillar in a community where external factors can often seem like insurmountable challenges. “Personally, as with all of our rec centers, I am always excited to see our citizens enjoying the recreation opportunities we provide for our participants. It’s what we are charged with and it’s what I have dedicated my life and career to,” Flournoy said. “A life of service to the community I love.”
