Detroit’s construction landscape is booming with billions of dollars in projects underway. Now there’s a unique opportunity for local contractors to connect with industry giants.

During National Construction Inclusion Week (October 13-17), the Gilbert Family Foundation’s Motor City Contractor Fund (MCCF), in partnership with leading construction firm Barton Malow and Invest Detroit, will host a special networking event aimed at strengthening Metro Detroit’s contractor base.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, from 5-7 p.m., MCCF and Barton Malow will open their doors at Barton Malow’s Southfield headquarters, offering a rare chance for contractors to interact with key players from the construction industry. This event, which marks the first public-facing activation of MCCF’s third cohort, will allow contractors to learn about the program’s ongoing efforts and connect directly with experts and decision-makers.

“This event is about breaking down barriers and offering a direct line of communication for contractors who often feel like they’re on the outside looking in,” said Shenai Jackson, Program Manager for MCCF. “It’s about creating a space where they can ask questions, make connections, and understand how to access the massive opportunities available in Detroit’s construction sector.”

The networking session will feature representatives from prominent organizations such as the City of Detroit Land Bank, the Detroit Development Fund, The Ownership Initiative, Invest Detroit, and, of course, the Gilbert Family Foundation. The goal is to provide contractors, particularly minority- and woman-owned businesses, with insights and direct access to major players in the construction and development space.

“This event is a game-changer,” said Jackson. “For many contractors, especially those from underserved communities, it can feel like a challenge to break into large-scale construction projects. But we want to show them the path forward and the resources available to help them grow.”

The event is being billed as an opportunity for attendees to gain visibility on major public and private construction projects in Detroit, which are valued at over $5 billion in construction and rehab funds currently in motion. Contractors will also have the chance to hear firsthand from MCCF’s leadership team, meet alumni from previous cohorts, and hear how the fund is supporting their growth and success.

“We’re committed to growing the local contractor base from the inside out,” said an MCCF spokesperson. “Through partnerships with organizations like Barton Malow and Invest Detroit, we’re helping ensure that Detroit-based businesses – especially those owned by minorities and women – are equipped to compete in a rapidly growing market.”

The event is open to all Detroit-based contractors, from newly established businesses to more seasoned professionals, as well as subcontractors looking to access larger project pipelines.
