Downtown Detroit Partnership Launches Free Juneteenth Celebrations in Parks

To add to the amazing line-up of Juneteenth activities happening in the D, the Downtown Detroit Partnership will host several free activities in three downtown Detroit parks. The evnets will include drum, dance and musical performances, poetry readings, movies, markets and more for all to enjoy!

 

Downtown Detroit Partnership and N’Namdi Center presents…Detroit Forever

5:30 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. June 14 – Campus Martius Park

Prior to the start of this week’s Juneteenth-themed Movie Nights in the D screening, attendees can take in live entertainment that will include African dance and drum ciphers featuring lead drummer Efe Bes, founder and lead musician of iBm and Bambuti music and movement group and known for fusing new-school African polyrhythms with other genres. The event also features poetry readings from Nandi Comer, an award-winning author and poet. She was appointed as the poet laureate of Michigan in 2023, becoming the state’s first poet laureate since the 1950s.

 

Movie Nights in the D presented by Capital One Café – “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” | PG-13

7 p.m. June 14 – Campus Martius Park

Following “Detroit Forever,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will be shown at Campus Martius Park. This screening is part of Downtown Detroit Partnership’s returning Movie Nights in the D, a free outdoor movie series featuring exceptional films on the big screen at Campus Martius Park every Wednesday through August. Moviegoers can bring a chair or blanket to spread out on the lawn for a relaxing, entertaining evening under the stars.

 

Black Business Showcase

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16 – Market Fridays – Cadillac Square

6 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 17 – Night Market – Beacon Park

This week’s pop-up markets will feature an exclusively Black-owned small business showcase from vendors across Detroit to honor and celebrate Juneteenth. During the day at Cadillac Square, visitors can peruse products and other goods, and enjoy a free live music from cellist/vocalist/electric guitarist King Sophia performing “neo-soul art music,” while having lunch in the park from the area’s most popular food trucks. In the evening at Beacon Park, guests can shop and take in the sounds of DJ Lovebeam and the Aisha Ellis Quartet, as well as savor mouthwatering options from Smoke Ring and Unity Catering food trucks.
