Beaumont Health System’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is partnering with Playworks Detroit on Saturday, Oct. 5 to transform the playground at Bennett Elementary School in Detroit into a colorful, safe space for play.

This community service project began as a vision of Harry N. Herkowitz, M.D., former chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery for Beaumont Health System, prior to his death in June. Now, his two children and 28 Beaumont volunteers are coming together to make that vision a reality in honor of him.

Born in Oak Park and a Wayne State University graduate, Dr. Herkowitz understood the value of a good learning environment and championed the important role of physical activity in the overall health of children.

Bennett Elementary School is located at 2111 Mullane Street in Detroit. Volunteers will arrive at the school at 8:30 a.m. and spend the morning painting. Some areas to be painted include: a wall ball area, a home base circle, a hopscotch course, a foursquare court and a playground mural.
