22nd Annual Hunger Free Summer Food Fight

HFH_Food_FightLocal Businesses Battle to Fight Hunger and Feed Children

(July 19, 2016 – Detroit, MI) … Monday, July 18, 2016 through Friday, July 29, 2016 more than forty southeast Michigan businesses and organizations will help feed hungry children this summer as they participate in the 22nd Annual Hunger Free Summer Food Fight to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners). This year’s annual food and fund drive has over 40 businesses (5,000+ employees) competing to raise the most meals over the two-week period. Gleaners’ annual Food Fight has raised over one million meals for hungry children and families.

Over 300,000 children in southeastern Michigan depend on school-provided free or reduced-fee meals and are at risk of missing important meals during the summer. According to the 2016 Kids Count Michigan study, child poverty has gone up in 80 of 83 Michigan counties since 2006, including in all five counties Gleaners serves.  A 2015 Journal of Adolescent Health review found that children who participated in school breakfast or lunch programs showed significant improvement in grades and standardized test scores as well as having fewer school absences.

Participating companies are grouped by number of employees and compete against others in their “weight category” for the Madeline Kafoury Memorial Trophies. The 2016 Hunger Free Summer Food Fight Categories include: Under 40 Employees, 40+ Employees, 90+ Employees, 175+ Employees, 500+ Employees, the Facebook Fan Favorite, and the New Participant Award. (A list of the 2016 Hunger Free Summer Food Fight participants is attached below.)
