For half a decade, the SWAG Awards have honored some of the best and brightest youth Detroit has to offer. The Michigan Chronicle has partnered with TCF Bank to fund nearly half a million dollars in scholarships to deserving Detroit high school seniors who demonstrate integrity, and a commitment to community service. This year however, the SWAG Awards has expanded that tradition.
William A. Ward once said, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” The Michigan Chronicle along with TCF Bank are proud to honor the great education professionals who go above and beyond to inspire the next generation of leaders. Their dedication to learning has not gone unnoticed, especially during this unprecedented time of adjusting to a new normal. It was difficult narrowing down the numerous nominations, but the Michigan Chronicle and TCF Bank are proud to introduce the inaugural 2020 SWAG Influential Educator class:
- Angela Austin, Cass Technical High School
- Maria Bell, Renaissance High School
- Kristina Eubanks, Mumford High School
- Vicki Green, Cass Technical High School
- John Johnson, University Prep Art and Design
Thanks to TCF Bank, each professional is receiving a $1,000 grant to go towards improving their classrooms and overall learning experience for scholars. TCF recognizes the challenges many teachers face in maximizing learning despite often being equipped with minimal resources. They take in alleviating some of that strain. Regardless of how education may look in the fall, TCF is proud to assist these educators in expanding programming to continue to mold young minds.
The Michigan Chronicle along with TCF Bank look forward to continuing this new tradition of honoring educational staff in the years to come and look forward to connecting them with this initial class.
