2018 Barristers' Ball – Party With A Purpose!

Making its highly anticipated comeback, The Wolverine Bar Association & The Wolverine Bar Foundation will host the 57th annual Barristers’ Ball benefiting various charitable initiatives aimed at improving diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. “The Past Remembered and Reclaimed” will set the tone for this year’s theme merging the Wolverine Bar’s mission to serve and its repeated outcome of crafting a memorable event filled with excellence and entertainment.
Although the Barristers’ Ball is the signature fundraiser for the Wolverine Bar Foundation, President Alex Simpson emphasizes the primary mission of the association. “The WBA has a goal of increasing minority representation in the legal profession. Our programs support this goal. These programs include the Judicial Externship program where minority students are provided the opportunity to work at the federal court in Detroit – the WBA provides these students with a stipend as these positions are unpaid.” said, President Simpson.
In addition to the primary goal of the association, the WBA also awards two scholarships annually. “The Damon J Keith Scholarship and the Wolverine Bar Foundation Scholarship. This year five students will receive scholarships and will be recognized at the Ball. The Barristers’ Ball is the WBA’s biggest and most significant fundraiser. The proceeds from the Ball go directly to funding the organization’s programs.” said, President Simpson.
Every year, more than 1,500 leaders from the legal, business, civic and political communities attend the Barristers’ Ball to celebrate the best of the Southeastern Michigan community. This black-tie affair commemorates the WBA’s 90-plus years of commitment to diversity, excellence in the legal profession and improvement to the quality of life in the metropolitan Detroit area. The event will continue to highlight community honorees and scholarship recipients.
This year’s honorees are Little Miss Flint – Amariyanna “Mari” Copeny, City of Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Ryan Ferguson – Flyback Productions and Nir Saar – Principal Mumford Academy.

Community engagement is the common theme among the Barristers’ Ball honorees, and according to President Simpson, this quality is a requirement for honorees past and present. “We really look to honor those whose actions are consistent with the organization’s values. Our honorees have done a tremendous job supporting our community and deserve to be recognized.” He continues, “ This year’s honorees are amazing people, those who have stepped up to the plate to improve our communities.”
The Barristers Ball will take place April 7, 2018, at 9:00 PM @ the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. Individual tickets for Wolverine Bar members are $125.00, and non-member tickets are $150.00. For more information visit www.wolverinebar.org
