Get ready for an evening of laughter and inspiration as Youth Are Bigger Than Life, a Detroit-based nonprofit, brings an exclusive charity comedy show to the historic Flagstar Strand Theatre on May 25 at 7:30 p.m. This event aims to draw between 300-500 attendees, with all proceeds going towards the organization’s scholarship fund and community initiatives like back-to-school drives and grocery giveaways.
Youth Are Bigger Than Life is on a mission to empower underprivileged youth through education. Founded to reduce dropout rates in Detroit’s schools, this organization helps young people develop the skills they need for a brighter future. Marvin Skipper, the founder and president, knows firsthand the challenges these youth face. A former all-star basketball player at Eastern Michigan University, Skipper’s journey from facing heart issues and getting a cardiac pacemaker to creating opportunities for others is truly inspiring. “Every young person has the potential to achieve greatness,” says Skipper. “Through events like the Youth Are Bigger Than Life Comedy Show, we’re not just raising funds; we’re igniting hope and resilience.”
Growing up in a single-parent household on Detroit’s east side, Skipper experienced many of the same struggles as the youth he now helps. Despite economic hardships and witnessing traumatic events, he channeled his energy into creating positive change. “Life threw me a curveball, but I refused to let it defeat me. Instead, I channeled my energy into creating opportunities for others, especially our youth, because they are indeed bigger than life.”
The comedy show promises a night filled with laughter and support for a great cause. With ticket prices ranging from $30 to $60, attendees can enjoy a memorable evening while contributing to meaningful initiatives. “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our youth. Let’s show them they are capable of achieving greatness,” Skipper urges.
