Wild Swan Theater will take the Wayne County Community College District’s (WCCCD) Heinz C. Prechter Educational and Performing Arts Center (EPAC) stage at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 24th with its production of Once Upon A Time for a show that is sure to thrill and entertain the whole family.
The fun starts at 12:30 p.m. with Halloween-themed pre-show indoor art activities including a Mask-Making workshop at 1:00 p.m. Registration is required for this workshop. At 2:00 p.m., Wild Swan Theater presents Once Upon a Time, a charming set of classic tales and songs for young children will be presented on stage. In true Wild Swan style, three performers and a musician create all the magic inherent in these timeless stories, making this first time theater experience unforgettable.
Children are encouraged to arrive wearing their Halloween costume for post-show activities include an on-stage costume parade and indoor trick-or-treating.
The EPAC is located on the WCCCD Downriver Campus at 21000 Northline Road in Taylor. This event is presented to the community at no cost by WCCCD’s School of Continuing Education. Pre-registration is required for the mask-making workshop as seats are limited.
One of the familiar and famous tales in the collection is The Three Billy Goats Gruff. As the traditional story unfolds, with one Billy Goat after another crossing the bridge, a very silly troll (Sandy Ryder) is revealed hiding below, his giant fork and knife and bib all the evidence young children need that this is fun and not scary.
A second tale, Reynard the Fox, provides a wonderful chance for audience participation as the children help Reynard make his shadow and his echo. The giant shadow and echo made by the audience wind up being very important to the plot of the tale.
Audience participation abounds in this production in the music and songs provided by David Mosher. Wild Swan audiences know David’s talent from other Wild Swan productions such as Frog and Toad and A Honey Pot of Pooh Stories. But David is also one of the most talented musicians in Southeast Michigan, performing with numerous groups like the Raisin Pickers, and also being named outstanding acoustic instrumentalist several times by Detroit Metro Times.
The final tale, The Three Little Pigs, rounds out the collection and the fun. Other actors in the production are Michelle Trame Lanzi and Jeremy Salvatori.
