Wayne County Treasurer Eric R. Sabree has announced that the Office will extend its hours by opening every Saturday in March to assist taxpayers. The additional office hours will provide residents with extra time to seek help before the critical March 31 deadline for entering a payment plan and receiving general tax assistance.
The Treasurer’s Office, located at 400 Monroe St 5th Floor, in Detroit, will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in March. However, services will be available by appointment only.
“In order to serve as many taxpayers as possible ahead of the March 31 deadline, we are extending our office hours every Saturday in March,” Treasurer Sabree said.
The March 31 deadline is crucial for Wayne County taxpayers who may be at risk of foreclosure due to unpaid property taxes. Residents must enter into a payment plan by this date to avoid losing their homes. The Treasurer’s Office offers various payment assistance programs, including interest reduction plans for eligible taxpayers, to help them manage their tax obligations.
Under Michigan law, property taxes that remain unpaid for three years result in foreclosure. This means that unpaid 2021 property taxes must be resolved by March 31, 2025, to prevent foreclosure proceedings. The Wayne County Treasurer’s Office encourages taxpayers to seek assistance as soon as possible to explore available payment options and avoid last-minute complications.
Property tax deadlines in Wayne County are set according to Michigan state law. Generally, property taxes are due twice a year: in the summer and in the winter. However, if taxes remain unpaid, they become delinquent on March 1 of the following year. After this point, delinquent taxes are transferred to the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office, where interest and fees begin to accrue.
If these taxes remain unpaid for three years, the property is subject to foreclosure. The March 31 deadline marks the last opportunity for property owners to enter a payment plan and prevent foreclosure before the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office moves forward with tax-related property seizures.
The Wayne County Treasurer’s Office provides various forms of assistance, including flexible payment plans, interest reduction programs, and financial counseling. By extending office hours, the office aims to make these resources more accessible to taxpayers who may struggle to visit during regular business hours.
“We encourage residents to take advantage of these additional hours to get the assistance they need. It is important to us that every taxpayer has access to the support and resources necessary, whether they need help with payment plans or other tax-related matters,” Sabree said.
Taxpayers who wish to schedule a visit can do so by calling 313-224-5990 or by booking online at www.treasurer.waynecounty.com.
