EUR was on the Scene with Gail Bean, Cobie Smulders, and Anders Holm the stars of “Unexpected,” a rare drama illuminating a teacher and student bond, in theaters Friday, July 24.
EUR: When was the last time something “Unexpected” happened to you and what was it?
Cobie Smulders: Boom! I just broke my leg, that was unexpected. I fell playing around in my apartment with my kid.
Gail Bean: When I was coming back from Columbia, I got to immigration and they said I needed a Visa to come back. I said, ‘no, please my flight leaves in 30 minutes, I promise I didn’t do anything wrong!’ The agent was talking to me in English, then she stopped talking to me and started talking to everyone else… in Spanish. I didn’t understand what was going on.
Cobie Smulders: Were you in the friendly booth or were you in the unfriendly room? That room is not friendly!…
Gail Bean: I was in the friendly booth but I was scared and praying, ‘don’t let me go into that room.’
EUR: “The Hollywood Reporter” put you (Gail Bean) on the “Next Gen Actors at Sundance: 10 Festival Breakouts,” how does that feel?
Gail Bean: It feels good! Everyone is so nice
Cobie Smulders: ‘About time!’ Is what I say. Gail is a phenomenal actress. I feel like she is someone who has been doing this for a long time. This one is a powerhouse. She came in and crushed it!
EUR: “Unexpected” illustrates how life can throw you for a loop…talk about that.
Cobie Smulders: We talk about this film being a movie about pregnancy from the female perspective. It’s also about a women’s emotional, psychological journey rather than the normal pregnancy jags…like morning sickness, cravings, the crazy labor and delivery. Which we totally did! But its more about a woman’s journey to becoming a mother and what that means and how you can keep a sense of yourself and also be a mother to a child.
