“In today’s economy, students need a college education more than ever to compete and succeed, and we as a country need them to have that education,” said Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D., president and CEO, UNCF. “By investing in our students now, we are providing them with a path to success that will pay future dividends for them, for their families and communities, and for all of us.”
An Evening of Jazz will feature a host of artists aimed to raise funds in support of UNCF’s efforts: vocalists Kimmie Horne and Armond Jackson; all-female jazz collective Straight Ahead; trumpeter Rayse Biggs; youthful musicians KDJ Trio; and local comedian Michael Bonner.
“We would like to invite everyone in the Detroit community and surrounding areas to attend our jazz event in support of our students and education,” said Barbara Jean Patton, Regional Development Director for UNCF. “We are giving them the education they need to have successful, secure financial futures and become the next generation of college-educated professionals, good citizens and community leaders for Detroit.”
UNCF has a long and strong commitment to Detroit. In 2012, nearly 100 students in Michigan received a total of $1,798,722 in grants and scholarships. UNCF-administered scholarships are open to all races and ethnicities, with the majority of award recipients being African-Americans.
