Tyrese scores first No. 1 album with ‘Black Rose’

It seems that singing on the subway has paid off for Tyrese Gibson. Nearly 17 years after he made his Billboard chart debut, the singer/actor has landed his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with his latest offering, “Black Rose.”

This chart is Billboard’s first to track a standard week of sales under the music industry’s plan to release albums globally on Fridays. Gibson takes the No. 1 spot with “Black Rose,” selling 83,000 copies, according to Nielsen Music. That was enough to knock off Taylor Swift’s “1989” and Meek Mil’s “Dreams Worth More Than Money,” which had spent two weeks at No. 1.

So how was Tyrese able to take “Black Rose” to the top of the charts without the backing of a major label? His marketing stunts seemed to have no limits – and no matter how awkward – he relentlessly self-promoted the album to ensure its success.

Among the wacky stunts Tyrese pulled to engage his fans were; doing a promo with a hobo, reenacting his 1994 Coca-Cola commercial, and actor Will Smith offered to post an ad for “Black Rose” on his Facebook page, but there was one catch. Tyrese had to jump in a pool, fully clothed in winter attire. Did he do it? Of course he did.

Meanwhile, there’s some talk that Tyrese is still being consider to play Green Lantern for the DC Cinematic Universe. Movie Pilot reports that Gibson and Chris Pine are favorable choices for the role, and Tyrese has expressed his interest in the part for years. He posted the following on Instagram back in April:

“I don’t need to ‘campaign’ for anything. I took the Oath and I’m ready to suit up as John Stewart IF it lands this way….. Great seeds have been planted at Warner Bros., they know I’m very excited about the possibilities.”

Tyrese will make his debut on “Empire when it returns to FOX September 23.
