Area residents celebrated the 75th anniversary of the North Rosedale Park Community House recently, and received an early Christmas gift, with the official opening of a new 2300-square-foot addition to the facility.  Organizers, donors and elected officials gathered on Friday, Dec. 4 for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and donor recognition program at the Community House, 18445 Scarsdale in Detroit.  The event was free and open to the public.
The ribbon-cutting was part of a weekend of events to celebrate the Community House anniversary and included a mixer with music throughout the decades, along with an elaborate anniversary gala dinner and reverse raffle, with the top prize being $5,000.
“This is a milestone and a significant accomplishment for our community and the entire city of Detroit,” said Marsha Bruhn, Steering Committee chairperson.  “Thanks to more than 300 individuals and organizations who supported our effort, we can celebrate a new and improved facility and the opportunity to enhance the programming we provide to the community.”
The Community House addition is part of The Legacy Project of North Rosedale Park, a capital campaign to raise funds to renovate the facility and surrounding park and to enhance community programming. The addition includes a new lobby and ADA-compliant entrances and bathrooms and other improvements.
Thus far, individuals and companies have donated $826,000 to The Legacy Project. Additional funds will be used to complete handicapped accessibility, repair the roof and to create a new plaza.  The Legacy Project is part of the strategic plan of the North Rosedale Park Civic Association.
North Rosedale Park is unique in that it is the only Detroit neighborhood that owns a community house and park, and all facilities are open to the public.  Construction of the addition and other improvements represent the first major renovation of the facility since the 1960s.
