I am proud to be a community representative for the American Cancer Society (ACS). ACS is the leading cancer-fighting organization in the country. Last June, at the Relay for Life of Detroit over 700 people came together as a community on the campus of Marygrove College with one common goal – to fight back against cancer and to celebrate the collective victory of local cancer survivors. We raised over $100,000 to support the fight against cancer.
On Thursday, March 22, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Detroit will officially get under way as event volunteers and participants gather for a kickoff party at the Frederick Douglass College Prep High School (formerly Murray-Wright High School), 2001 West Warren. I’m inviting all Detroiters to attend this kickoff celebration to learn more about the 2012 Relay For Life of Detroit and how they can become part of an exciting event that will pave the way to a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Registration and refreshments are from 6:30 to 7 pm and the program is from 7 to 8 p.m.
The 2012 Relay For Life of Detroit will take place on June 16-17 at Marygrove College. from 10 a.m. to 10 a.m. Although the 2012 Relay For Life of Detroit is more than four months away, now is the time to get involved by attending the kickoff on March 22. Relay For Life is ACS’s signature event, dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight cancer. Teams of family, friends and coworkers camp out overnight, taking turns walking the track. During the event, participants and visitors will have a chance to celebrate the victory of area cancer survivors during the Survivors Lap at 10 a.m.; remember those we have lost to the disease during the poignant Luminaria Ceremony at 10 p.m.; and participate in the Fight Back Ceremony at 3 p.m. that gives everyone a chance to proclaim their way of taking action against the disease.
