Inkster recently made history as One Detroit Credit Union opened the city’s first financial institution in over seven years. The grand opening of the new mini branch at the Booker Dozier Recreation Center drew community members, local leaders, and advocates who celebrated this long-awaited step toward financial access and economic empowerment. With speeches from Mayor Byron Nolen, representatives from Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s office, and One Detroit Credit Union executives, the ribbon-cutting highlighted the critical role this branch will play in revitalizing underserved communities and fostering opportunity for Inkster residents.
Portia Powell, incoming CEO of One Detroit Credit Union, emphasized this new branch is more than just a place to bank; it is a symbol of opportunity, growth, and progress.
“We are honored to bring our mission of credible, fair, and reasonably priced financial services to Inkster. We are committed to meeting the community’s needs and fostering financial empowerment for individuals and families,” Powell said.
For 90 years, One Detroit Credit Union has served as Detroit’s community financial institution with a mission to impact and change lives. As a non-profit, member-owned institution, One Detroit has offered credible, fair, and reasonably priced financial products and services to the Detroit community, with special concern for those overlooked by the mainstream banking system. The opening of this branch will offer convenient access to financial products and personalized services catered towards residents, emphasizing their needs.
One Detroit Credit Union donated $2,500 to the Inkster Police Department’s Shop for a Cop program, a holiday project that brings happiness by assisting families in need.
“We intend to become an active community partner and fully support and develop products that meet the specific needs of Inkster residents,” Powell said.
“Our commitment extends beyond just offering financial services; we plan to be deeply involved in the Inkster community by forming partnerships that foster financial wellness and prosperity for everyone. Through our initiatives, we aim to empower individuals, support local businesses, and contribute to the overall economic growth and stability of the area.”
The city of Inkster has historically had limited access to convenient financial institutions. However, it is now focused on growth under the theme “Discover. Grow. Unite.” The opening of this new branch will honor the city’s legacy and help lay the foundation for future economic development.
Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen highlighted this is a bold step forward for the city of Inkster as they welcome One Detroit Credit Union to the Booker Dozier Recreation Center.
“I am thrilled that after years of limited access, the city will finally have a convenient financial institution right in our backyard,” Nolen said.
“One Detroit Credit Union’s commitment to partner with our community is evident in their dedication to provide comprehensive financial services, fostering local economic development, and supporting the unique needs of Inkster’s residents and businesses. I look forward to having a more financially empowered community and a long-lasting partnership that will undoubtedly leave a positive mark on our city.”
