The Oakland County Health Department issued an order Saturday requiring residents to wear masks in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The order comes one day after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s statewide order requiring Michiganders wear masks in certain settings.
Oakland County’s mask mandate orders citizens to follow safety procedures and wear a mask when:
- Inside a public area (including K-12 students).
- Waiting for public transportation to or from a destination.
- Playing a physical sport with others. Athletes also have the option to consistently maintain 6 feet of social distance.
- Outside and gathered with members outside of your household. You may also choose to consistently maintain 6 feet of social distance.
These orders to do not apply to anyone:
- Under the age of five years old. Younger children are encouraged to wear a face covering, as expressed by the CDC.
- Performing a service – giving a speech, officiating a wedding, etc.
- Engaging in physical exercise outside of the home.
- Eating or drinking at a restaurant or food establishment.
- Speaking for a limited time to order to identify themselves while in public
- Communicating with someone who requires visual access to one’s mouth (the disabled, hearing impaired, etc.)
- Engaging in a public safety role (law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, etc.)
