Five, four, three, two, one — happy new year! That’s what many in Detroit and around the world will be saying when the clock strikes midnight and everyone will say so long to 2020 — a year of change and slight chaos.
But where will you be by 11:59 p.m. Dec. 31 to ring in 2021? In your living room wearing PJs or safely out on the town dressed to the nines? Whatever, or wherever, you will be, having fun the last few moments of 2020 can be had throughout Detroit. Here’s a few ideas on hand if you still don’t have any plans.
Mount Clemens resident Nell Keaton plans to lay low this new year.
“For new year’s eve I’m going to order some food, do some shopping and wait for the new year to come in,” she said. “The pandemic changed my normal routine because I would usually be with family and friends but being home this year and celebrating with my daughters I’m still happy. And waiting for things to become safe again so I can go back out and get together with others.”
If you’re going out safely hit the town in style with these local events:
- Attend a masquerade paint party in Detroit.
- Attend an open mic new year’s eve gala in Highland Park.
- Attend a new year’s eve church service in Eastpointe.
If you’re staying in [kind of]:
- Plan a new year’s eve driveby celebration and wave to your family and friends nearby
- Dress up and stay in and host virtual parties and pop some bubbly at home.
- Support your local Black-owned businesses and while you’re staying in grab a bite to eat to celebrate the new year on a full stomach.
- Host a watch party and rent a movie and chill.
- Call it a night! If you have children, party a little earlier and get your ZZZ’s in shortly after the clock strikes midnight. Don’t worry, we won’t judge you.
