New Musical Celebrates The Soul of R&B

After 15 years of recovery from active addiction, local veteran playwright Loren Harper bounces back big with a new Broadway Bound musical celebrating three decades of R&B Soul music.

Featuring some of Detroit’s most talented artists, Loren Harper’s The Legendary Soul of R&B became the talk of the town when it sold out it’s first run April 28-30.

Back by popular demand, The Legendary Soul of R&B rolls into Mary Grove College Liberal Arts Auditorium for 4 big shows Sat and Sun July 16 & 17 – This time, even stronger than before. As a 30-year theater veteran who found early national success as the director of shows such as Wicked Ways, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, and The Devil Made Me Do It, Loren Harper bounced back from his own addictions and has spent the last 15 years as a counselor helping others seeking recovery. He looks forward to an even brighter future following his passion in theater.

His latest project, The Legendary Soul of R&B is a wonderful interactive trip down memory lane where the audience gets to sing along with the cast on some of the greatest R&B music that has served as the soundtrack for our lives. “The joy people get from singing and dancing to music they grew up with is indescribable and that’s what I want to bring to this city in the form of this production,” says Harper.

The show features music made popular by R&B hit makers such as The Emotions, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Earth, Wind and Fire, Al Green and Phyllis Hyman. The icing on the cake is the show-stopping celebration of the late legendary Lou Rawls superbly performed by Loren Harper himself.
