On Monday, August 26, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM)-Detroit Branch Office will host its 7th Annual Cool Blue Monday fundraiser at the MGM Grand Detroit.
African Americans are at increased risk of diabetes and hypertension, the leading causes of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. Additionally, the incidence rate of kidney failure in Detroit is 2.6 times higher than the national average. The NKFM-Detroit Branch Office offers a variety of programs that serve more than 111,000 Detroit residents living with chronic kidney disease and the thousands more who are at risk. Among these are programs centered in the community, as well as programs based in schools throughout metro Detroit.
The Healthy Hair Starts with a Healthy Body™ program trains African American hairstylists to speak with their clients about nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention. A male version of the program, Dodge the Punch: Live Right™ teaches African American barbers to speak with their clients about healthy lifestyles. Together, these programs have encouraged 58 percent of individuals to make a healthy lifestyle change such as eating healthier, increasing physical activity, or quitting smoking.
The NKFM-Detroit Branch Office also offers a program called Healthy Families Start with You to serve parents and children in Head Start schools. The program helps to teach parents how to make healthy lifestyle choices for themselves and their families. A component of the program, Regie’s Rainbow Adventure™, educates preschool children about nutrition and physical activity through a series of interactive story books.
Healthy Kids and Kidneys, teaches middle school children in Detroit Public Schools the importance of exercise and nutrition. Students learn how to have healthy lifestyles to prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease. Healthy Kids and Kidneys reaches 400 children each year and serves kids who are at the poverty level. Outcomes show that children significantly increase their knowledge regarding physical activity, nutrition, and chronic disease prevention.
Personal Action Toward Health (PATH) is a chronic disease prevention and management program, the six-week workshop that helps people living with long-term health problems (or their caregivers) to better manage their symptoms and improve their health. Participants create personal action plans and learn how to deal with the challenges of ongoing health problems. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) helps those at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Research has shown this program reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58%.
In support of these vital programs, Cool Blue Monday will offer a spectacular evening of entertainment. The event commences at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m. Maurielle Lue of Fox 2 Detroit will serve as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.
The MGM Grand Detroit, Grand Ballroom, located at 1777 Third Street in Detroit. Attire is stylishly chic and the event will feature an elegant strolling buffet, live entertainment, and cocktails. There will also be both silent and live auctions featuring many upscale gift items. All proceeds from the event will support the vital prevention programs and patient services of the NKFM-Detroit Branch Office.
