MVAA Provides Free Discharge Papers, Vital Services for Michigan Veterans and Families

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) is reminding veterans that they may be able to receive a free copy of their military discharge document, commonly known as a DD-214, directly from the Agency by visiting Michigan.gov/DD214requestform.

MVAA Director Brian L. Love highlighted an increase in the number of companies charging veterans up to $200 to obtain a copy of their DD-214 in recent years, but in many cases, these veterans end up without the documentation they need.

“No veteran should have to pay for this vitally important discharge document, and my office is committed to ensuring that every Michigander who served knows that they can get this document, and other services, for free simply by filling out our online form or by calling our Michigan Veterans Resource Service Center at 1-800-MICH-VET,” Love said.

The DD-214 Report of Separation is an important document for veterans to prove their service history. Without this form, veterans cannot access many of the benefits they earned through their service including GI Bill benefits, VA home loans, disability claims, and veteran-specific hiring programs.

By offering veterans a free copy of a their DD-214, if the agency has the document on file, the MVAA can help more veterans connect with their earned benefits and help to improve the quality of life for veterans and their families.

In addition to the DD-214 for Free program, the MVAA also has accredited VSOs on staff who can help veterans and their families apply for their benefits. MVAA VSOs are currently located in:

Other free services, including connecting with an accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO) to help veterans file claims or review their current benefits, are also available by calling 1-800-MICH-VET (642-4838) or by visiting Michigan.gov/MVAA.
