Michigan officials announced Thursday citizens whose 39 weeks of unemployment benefits have ceased can get an extension of up to 20 weeks.
As a result of COVID-19, Michigan has suffered from record numbers of statewide unemployment cases. State officials say the nearly five-month-long extension will create a necessary cushion for unemployed Michiganders.
“The Extended Benefit program will provide a much-needed safety net for Michiganders who have exhausted their current benefits and are still dealing with the long-term effects of unemployment due to COVID-19,” said UIA Director Steve Gray.
The period for regular state benefits for the unemployed is 26 weeks. An additional 13 weeks is allotted in response to COVID-19.
The maximum amount given per week is around $362 for those getting unemployment benefits. An additional $300 is given to Michiganders who received at least $100 in unemployment pay during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Applicants must fit the same requirements as presented for regular state unemployment insurance.
