Friends of Detroit’s Mariners Inn will tee up on Friday, June 14th at Northville Hills Golf Club located at 15565 Bay Hill Drive in Northville for the 11th Annual Mariners Inn Golf Classic, presented by Strategic Staffing Solutions and the Michigan Chronicle.
Registration for the golf classic is $125 per golfer. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch will be served and there will be a dinner and awards ceremony immediately following play.
Aside from great golfing supporting the nonprofit substance abuse treatment center, guests can expect a hole-in-one contest, door prizes, raffles, a silent auction and much more. Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams.
At the outing, this will be the second year that the Samuel Logan Jr. Community Spirit Award will be presented to a person or organization in the area of cultural arts for their achievements or contributions in the community. Last year’s award was given to Wayne County Community College District for their achievements in continuous education. This year’s winner will be announced at the June 14th event. It is an honor to continue this award presentation in Mr. Logan’s honor. Both of his daughters Rhonda Terry and Diane Taylor have become great friends of Mariners Inn. “It is a pleasure to work with the two of them as members of the selection committee for this honorable award,” said Shauna Vercher-Morrow, Director of Fundraising and Special Events.
The majority of the proceeds from the Golf Classic will benefit the mission of Mariners Inn, via programming, which provides housing, food and substance abuse treatment for more than 500 men each year. However, some of the proceeds will be earmarked for scholarships for residents of Mariners. Dave Sampson, CEO indicated, “Education is a very important component to ensuring that the legacy of our friend Sam Logan lives on. We believe that it is paramount for our men and the community to benefit from the generosity of others while preparing themselves to be in a position to give back as well.”
Last year, three scholarships were awarded for continuous education. The three recipients are currently enrolled in classes at Wayne County Community College District, Specs Howard School of Media Arts and Michigan Barber School. “All three of these gentlemen are doing quite well”, remarked Vercher-Morrow. This year’s scholarships will go to emerging artists at Mariners Inn. Mariners offer art therapy as a part of its therapeutic programming. The program has uncovered several men with true artistic capabilities; much of their artwork lines the corridors of the agency. The month of July, Mariners will have an art exhibition on display at the Bolls Family YMCA in downtown Detroit. The name of the exhibit is appropriately named, “The Art of Transformations”. The opening night reception will take place on Monday, July 1st from 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event.
