The third annual JVS + Kadima Frame of Mind Benefit and Arts Showcase will be held May 15 from 5-8 p.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
The event is offering a one-of-a-kind theatrical immersive evening with singing, music, dance, acting and art. It will showcase the talents of JVS + Kadima members who take part in Creative Expressions, an artistic enrichment program run by the organization for individuals who have serious mental health challenges, or intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Professional musicians, singers and actors with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Opera and Matrix Theatre have been collaborating with more than 20 JVS + Kadima members to create the content for Frame of Mind and will perform alongside them. Artists from the College for Creative Studies have been working with members to produce visual art which will be displayed in a gallery setting.
This is the first Frame of Mind to be held indoors; the 2020 event was offered virtually, and last summer’s program was held outdoors on the roof of the Detroit Opera House due to pandemic protocols.
For sponsorship opportunities and tickets, which cost $100, go to the events page at www.kadimacenter.org or click here; all proceeds will support the Creative Expressions program.
“We are incredibly lucky to have the support of partners from some of the foremost creative institutions in Detroit,” said CEO and President of JVS + Kadima Paul Blatt. “They willingly devote time and resources to the clients we serve, allowing them to explore and develop their own artistic expression which we are now so happy to share during the Frame of Mind event.”
The event is chiefly a musical theater production. Matrix Theatre worked with JVS + Kadima members to write, plan and act in a play; the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Creative Arts Therapies helped compose music and will also be performing alongside member; Detroit Opera assisted in singing and choreography performances. In addition, The College for Creative Studies worked with members to produce artwork including 10, 5 feet tall paintings.
“Detroit Opera is very proud to be partnering with JVS + Kadima. It’s been such a wonderful experience to work with their members, all talented artists who have created such personal, thoughtful performances,” said Detroit Opera’s Director of Education Andrea Scobie. “Most of all, we love seeing the arts at work through this collaboration, providing much-needed connection, building community, and allowing a greater understanding of the human experience.”
Creative Expressions is a philanthropically funded program that takes place throughout metro Detroit at partner locations like the College for Creative Studies’ computer lab, galleries, parks, virtually and at the Lois and Milton Y. Zussman Activity Center in Southfield. Activities include visual and performing arts, photography, writing, poetry, jewelry-making, dance, and art-therapy.
