Jada Pinkett-Smith has partnered with Netflix for a two-season docu-series focused on African Queens. Produced by Jada Pinkett-Smith and her husband Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios, the untitled series will consist of expert interviews from historians plus re-enactments for enhanced visuals.

“As the mother of a young Black woman, it is important to me that she learns the lessons of the African Queens who paved the way for the success of generations of Black women,” Pinkett-Smith said.

Season one will focus on the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. Cleopatra is widely known for her intelligence, power of seduction, and goddess-like beauty. The Egyptian Queen ruled ancient Egypt for nearly three decades. The heritage of Cleopatra is widely debated. Many believe she is a descendant of Greek lineage. Other theories suggest she descend from North Africa. However, Hollywood has always portrayed Cleopatra as being white. The series will reexamine her heritage.

Queen Nzinga will be the feature African Queen in season two. Nzinga is the first female ruler of Matamba and Ndongo. Nzinga, a political warrior, fought against the Portuguese attempt to expand the slave trade in Central Africa.

Pickett-Smith is also the host and executive producer of Facebook’s top-rated show, Red Table Talk. Smith co-host the show with her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and daughter, Willow Smith. Jada Pinkett-Smith, 49, has recently wrapped up production on The Matrix 4. Smith will reprise her role as Niobe. The film is scheduled for release in theaters worldwide on December 22. Pinkett Smith also executive produced the film Charm City Kings, starring rapper Meek Mill. Charm City Kings follows a 14-year-old boy who wants to become a part of a Baltimore dirt bike gang. Meek Mill plays the leader of the group, who later becomes a mentor to the teen.

Jada Pinkett says she is very “passionate” about her upcoming production. “I am very passionate and excited to bring the stories and lessons of these powerful women to light. And to showcase their strength, leadership, and undeniable influence on history.”
